Moving Forward: we declare a Climate Emergency

We all have a duty to care for the only planet we have. So, at The Inside Trek, we declare a climate emergency and commit to five actions to address our carbon. Here's what that means

Here at The Inside Trek, we may not be able to hike at the minute. But that doesn’t mean we can’t still move forward.

So since lockdown began, (alongside appreciating the nature around us) we’ve been working away on making The Inside Trek an even stronger, better business for whenever hiking holidays and trips are back on the agenda. When we say we’re committed to better, we mean it. And so I’m really proud to announce the first of the things we’ve been working on.

The Inside Trek has signed up to Tourism Declares, an initiative that supports tourism businesses, organisations and individuals in declaring a climate emergency, and taking purposeful action to reduce their carbon emissions in line with the advice from The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to cut global carbon emissions.

Declaring a Climate Emergency: Our five commitments

Like all the other signatories, we’re committing to the following five actions:

1. To develop a ‘Climate Emergency Plan’ as soon as possible and in any event within the next 12 months. This plan will set out our intentions to reduce carbon emissions over the next decade and tackle the Climate Emergency.

2. To accept the IPCC-led need to cut global carbon emissions to 55% below 2017 levels by 2030 in order to keep the planet within 1.5 degrees of warming, and ensure our ‘Climate Emergency Plan’ represents actions designed to achieve this as a minimum. We will do this by delivering transparent, measurable and increasing reductions in the total carbon emissions per customer arising from our business.

3. Once its ready, to publicly share our ‘Climate Emergency Plan’ and then update on progress each year.

4. To encourage our suppliers and partners to join us in declaring a Climate Emergency; share best practice amongst peers; and actively participate in the Tourism Declares community

5. To advocate for change, recognising the need for system change across the industry and calling for urgent regulatory action to accelerate the transition towards zero carbon air travel.

We have no hesitation in throwing ourselves behind this initiative. This is the only planet we have. We all rely on it hugely. And we all therefore have a duty to care for it. So The Inside Trek declares a Climate Emergency.
